wecamewithbrokenteeth - We're Packing Are You?

(07 Nov 2010)

It's a shame that I have to give this such a low rating, since, in theory, everything was there to make We're Packing, Are You? a good, if not a great release. The sound is admittedly unique and very strange, and the lack of direction in the songs eventually sounds more of a quality than a nuisance. Sadly, none of that makes up for the fact that this is really boring to listen to.

I have no idea why this is called grindcore, since it sounds completely unlike it. This is more in the vein of Ambient Deathcore. The "guitars" and drum machine here will generally just be doing breakdown riffs throughout the songs, randomly going into a blastbeat or sometimes something else. This means that the songs are pretty much directionless, but also very unpredictable, despite doing the same thing throughout. The riffs being repetitive, you really notice every single change that is made in any one place, letting the few melodic parts in the album to shine through and really capture your attention.

The minimalistic approach to deathcore and simple keyboard parts, as well as some use of samples, gives WPAY a very bleak feel to the album. It's hard not to feel even a little sad when listening to this. The atmosphere in his album is really moving, and that's probably its best strength, making for a very original sound.

I started out listening to this for laughs, and realized that I actually wanted to like it. Sadly, I don't. Too damn boring.

Standout tracks:

What?
