Appalling Spawn - Freedom, Hope and Fury

(29 Dec 2010)

Who'd have known that this band would eventually morph into Lykathea Aflame... Appalling Spawn already show here a rather unique style of Death Metal, and when they hit a high note, it sometimes surpasses the material on Elvenefris, specially riff-wise, but the over-all sound of the album ends up enjoyable, but lacking variation.

Freedom, Hope And Fury is far more guitar-oriented album, and, as well as having a far stronger emphasis on melody. Sometimes this will work in favour, specially when they find melodies that are memorable, but, for the most part, the result is far from stellar. My main problem with this album is that it tends to not be very memorable, and the songs for the most part won't really appear to go anywhere, meaning that the 30-something minutes of the album just drag on indefinitely until Self Monarch is over and then everything falls silent. There is only but the tiniest little hint that that song is the album's closer, and it most probably will go by unnoticed at first.

And, noticing the silence, you give the album another listen, because you don't know what happened, but you enjoyed it, whatever it was.
