Ulcerate - Everything Is Fire
(11 Dec 2010)
It's hard to get into an album when the worst songs are stuck right in the beginning, and that's precisely what happens with Everything Is Fire. This release has two pretty boring songs, and they're respectively tracks 1 and 2. As a result, it took me about a month to actually start listening to this. If it weren't for the fact that even those two songs showed a lot of originality, I would have dismissed this album completely, and deemed it "overrated".
What you have here a unique blend of extremely technical and intricate death metal with dissonant riffs to create a crushing, monolithic sound. With this sophomore effort, Ulcerate have made the musical equivalent of having a surgery in a putrid hospital, where before the procedure the surgeon cuts their finger with the scalpel, looks at some paperwork and says "uhh... I suck at this... Let's see what I can do.", at which point you realize that there will be complications and you might not survive your nose job, and, oh look, you're strapped to the surgical bed and are being injected with anaesthetic. And you know what? It's fucking awesome! For the most part...
Standout tracks:
Withered And Obsolete
Caecus
The Earth At Its Knees
