Gotan Project - La Revancha Del Tango

(14 Jan 2011)

It's funny, really. When this album came out, it sounded so modern and fresh and ahead of its time... You could imagine the faceless, clean-shaven successful people in bluish dark-grey suits holding glasses of champagne while driving their brand new spotless dark green Bentley at the Frankfurt airport while the Euro symbol appeared on the satnav because, fuck it, it's 2001. Yet, when you hear it now, you realize just how quickly and ferociously La Revancha Del Tango has aged. It's all so sleek and professional and juuuuust not completely lifeless and so... successful-sounding, that it got completely stuck to the time it was made and became completely defined by it.

The result is an album that is pleasing to the ear, and just memorable enough to be pleasing to the ear on repeated listens, but, frankly, this music only really belongs in ads for watches encrusted with a number of diamonds larger than the population of Mongolia. It's all very shallow.
