Ketha - III-ia

(20 Aug. 2010)

This is an album that I'm not sure on whether I like or not. Similar to Cynic's Focus, some days I will love, while others I will find it boring. So, anyway, what is Ketha's III-ia? Ketha is, theoretically, Technical Death Metal. I say theoretically because, admittedly, even though there are quite some elements of technicality, this is very far from being a bunch of dudes showing off their 1337 skillz. These guys add awesome idea after awesome idea, with subtle melodies, some more psychedelic parts and a distinct resemblance to Korn throughout, with a strong emphasis on grooves, which is not at all unwelcome.

The production is as good as it gets for an experimental album, and is one of the best features of III-ia. It's crunchy, chunky, groovy and lets through the tight playing. The bass playing and drumming both deserve a special mention here. The drummer, Fularz, manages to play some technical stuff while being subtle throughout. Kucharski, on the other hand, makes the bass nearly the lead instrument in the album, at the same time being the backbone of the band.

If you're looking for brutality, mindblowing solos or an album that screams "TECHNICULL!!!1!" throughout, this is not the album for you. On the other hand, if you want music that will slowly grow on you as you learn the songs and analyze the different parts and how they go together, look no further.
