Shining (NOR) - Grindstone

(07 Oct 2010)

Although I might not be in a very good position to review a Shining album, since I'm a huge fan of theirs, I can say what you can expect from Grindstone. This album is the gap between the Jazz Fusion on In The Kingdom Of Kitsch You Will Be A Monster and the progressive industrial metal on Blackjazz, and it sounds unlike either, bringing a bunch of fresh ideas and constantly changing genre. It takes quite a long time for this album to grow on you, and at first it's rather likely that it will sound rather inconsistent and riddled with a huge amount of filler, but then you start to get accustomed to it and see its genius.

Most songs on Grindstone sound like undeveloped ideas, and that's what's great about it. The songs don't need to develop any more than they are, which means that this 44 minute album will appear to be far longer. Lyrics are also extremely rare on the album, only appearing on three tracks.

The only two songs that give any indication of the direction they took with Blackjazz would be "In The Kingdom Of Kitsch You Will Be a Monster" and "Fight Dusk With Dawn", meanwhile the rest of the album seeming to be more inspired in progressive rock and maybe classical music, so it's pretty easy to see the leaps they take between albums. Great release all around.

Standout tracks:
Winterreise
Moonchild Mindgames
The Red Room
Psalm
Fight Dusk With Dawn
