Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao

(17 Nov 2010)

I'll start by talking about the first thing that is noticeable, in other words, the muddy production. It is perfect for the album. Criticize it all you want, it makes the defining characteristic of Ordo Ad Chao evident and amplified: the atmosphere. Listening to this is like listening to the mind of someone insane.

With this in mind, it is not of much importance whether or not the songs make much sense structurally, the overall sound being more important than the details. Staying with the metaphor of this being the sound of insanity, it's not like lack of sanity implies lack of thought. There clearly is thought, just like there are clearly songs here, it's just that any idea of coherence ceases to exist. These tracks don't seem to have much if any structure, just effortlessly going from part to part.

This is an album of atmosphere, and the riffs are of no real interest. They're just there to compliment the rest. The obvious main instruments here are the mindblowing, heavy, very atmospheric drums and Attila's vocal chords, both doing an excellent job, and providing most of the existing coherence.

As an artistic statement, as a concept, this album is as perfect as they get, and will certainly be remembered for its achievements. Now, as songs go, this Ordo Ad Chao is nothing special, the thing only truly working all together.

Standout tracks:
Wall Of Water
Deconsecrate
Illuminate Eliminate
