Cryptopsy - The Unspoken King

 (03 Aug. 2010)

The only real difference between Technical Death Metal and Technical Deathcore seems to be that the sense of direction in TDM is substituted by breakdowns in the latter, meaning that most Deathcore songs are just a bunch of riffs and breakdowns that doesn't go anywhere. This means that, unless it's really terrible (Emmure comes to mind), I won't dismiss a Deathcore song right away, only after realizing that it's downright boring.

With The Unspoken King, it's the same. Worship Your Demons is sort of nice, but that's about as far as you can realistically listen to this album before wishing it were something else, like another Cryptopsy album, for example.

The production is rather thin, and the guitar tone is pathetic. The vocals would be good for metalcore, but not for Cryp... oh... wait. Actually, they blend in with the music perfectly.

Verdict: this is far better than a lot of deathcore, but it's still deathly boring.

Standout tracks:
